What Makes a Great Video Advertisement?

Great video ads share a clear structure: hook, problem, solution, product, proof and call to action. Here is how to build each part.

Great video ads can look wildly different, but under the surface they share the same skeleton. Once you can see the structure, you can build ads that consistently perform instead of hoping for a lucky hit.

The 6-part framework

1. Hook

The opening moment that stops the scroll. It can be a surprising visual, a bold claim, a question or a promise of payoff. If the hook fails, nothing else matters — see how to hook viewers in the first 3 seconds.

2. Problem

Name the tension your viewer feels. This is where they recognise themselves: "that is exactly my problem." Even a light, playful problem creates the pull that makes people keep watching.

3. Solution

Introduce the idea that resolves the tension. This is the turn — the moment the ad shifts from problem to hope.

4. Product

Show your product as the concrete embodiment of the solution. Make it clear, make it appealing, and make it obvious how it helps.

5. Proof

Give a reason to believe: a result, a demonstration, a happy customer, a satisfying before-and-after. Proof turns interest into trust.

6. Call to action

Tell people exactly what to do next — one clear step. See how to create a great call to action.

It does not have to be literal

You do not need six separate "chapters." In a 15-second ad, several beats can happen at once — a single visual can carry hook, problem and product together. The framework is a checklist, not a rigid template. See what to put in a 15-second advertisement.

Beyond structure: the intangibles

One clear message

The best ads say one thing. Clarity is the difference between "I get it" and "what was that about?"

Emotion

Humour, warmth, surprise and delight make ads stick. A neutral ad is a forgotten ad — this is why storytelling matters.

A distinctive look

If your ad looks like every other ad, it borrows their forgettability. A unique style — like handmade claymation — makes the whole framework land harder because people actually watch.

Put it to work

Before you shoot anything, write down your hook, problem, solution, product, proof and call to action in one line each. If any line is weak, fix it now — it is far cheaper than fixing it in production.
