Claymation vs Traditional Video Advertising
Claymation and live-action video advertising each have strengths. Compare cost, production, tone and memorability to decide which format fits your campaign.
Traditional live-action video and claymation both sell products effectively — but they do it in very different ways. Choosing between them is less about which is "better" and more about which fits your message, your budget and the impression you want to leave.
What we mean by each format
Traditional video advertising usually means live-action footage: real people, real locations, filmed with a camera. Think product demonstrations, lifestyle scenes, testimonials and talking-head ads.
Claymation advertising is hand-sculpted clay animated frame by frame — a form of stop-motion that creates a tactile, characterful miniature world.
Head to head
Standing out
Live action can look premium, but it also looks like most other ads. Claymation is an instant pattern interrupt — it does not resemble the content around it, which is a real advantage on crowded social feeds.
Tone and personality
Live action is flexible and can feel aspirational, serious or emotional. Claymation leans playful, warm and human. If your brand wants to feel approachable and fun, clay does a lot of the work for you.
Cost and logistics
Live action can carry hidden costs: talent, locations, crew, equipment, scheduling and reshoots. Claymation cost is driven mainly by length and complexity, and it is produced in a controlled studio setting, so there are fewer moving logistical parts.
Flexibility
Want your product to fly, transform, talk or build itself? That is difficult or expensive in live action but completely natural in claymation, where the only limit is what can be sculpted and shot.
Reusability
A claymation character or clay-world "look" can become a recognisable brand asset you reuse across many ads — a consistency that helps make your brand more memorable over time.
When to choose live action
- You need real people demonstrating a service or physical result.
- Authentic testimonials or human faces are central to the message.
- Your brand tone is strictly formal or clinical.
When to choose claymation
- You are competing for attention on social and need to stand out.
- Your product suits a playful, characterful tone.
- You want a distinctive, reusable brand look.
- You want visuals that would be impossible or costly to film for real.
You do not always have to pick one
Many brands use live action for some content and claymation for scroll-stopping social ads and launches. The formats can complement each other across a campaign.
